Mine’s a Guinness

That’s a phrase usually coming from my mouth whenever some poor bloke says he’s buying a round.
I always prefered dark beer. Tastes better, looks better and generaly is better.
Now Guinness — that even ain’t a beer. It’s the drink of the gods.
No, I’m not on their payroll — I’m trying to point out what a simple pleasure can grow into.
I was probably six when I first tasted beer. It took me to get to the age of 14/15 to get a likeing for beer.
In the States the legal age for drinking is 21. Here in Croatia it’s 18 but most kids start going out at the age of 14 – and thus they start drinking.
Croatia is well known for its wine. But that’s not Croatian kid’s favourite — it’s beer.
Now, let’s get back to the story.
I tried Guinness for the first time when I was 16. I was in London — you couldn’t get the stuff yet in Croatia. Back in Yugoslavia you could buy it in any store (same as now) but back then the war was barely over and our import/export was screwed up.
London was a big mixture of experiences for me. A lot of stuff I never seen before.
I went there to study English language and ended up drinking beer.
And the second was far more educational. Now, don’t jump at me! Wait ’till I finish the story.
There were two reasons for this:
1. My English was already good (if I may say so) and the only thing I could do is brush up on my accent.
2. I got drunk and after that it took me 15 minutes to get beaten up and mugged.
Now that is education! Never get drunk alone in a city you don’t know well!
Fortunately I didn’t have much money on me and I didn’t carry my passport with me. I got sobered up quickly and went home.
Never told this to anyone untill now.
Next day I was drinking Guinness again — but this time in my hotel room. Much safer! (except for your wallet – those mini-bars should be illegal — I payed less for some motorcycles)
But ever since then I have this great affection towards Guinness.
The reason I’m writing this all?
Well I just opened one. ;)
