Taken from the "Who is Teabags" thread out of profound respect and affection for Miss Tea, the sweetest woman to grace these halls of Ozami.

Natchia starts off with: "Dang....can't see the snake...or the girl I'm assuming is also in the pic."

have you tried a different browser?
Max is fond of Netscape
I use FireFox
you should use FireFox, Natch
join the 733+ at least in your surfing method.

Yup. Firefox is great. And it's safer.
Natchai

What makes it safer?

Interesting. Do they charge $$ for the download?
melkior

Nope. Firefox is completely free.

Hm...I may attempt this over the weekend, if I have time.
Milky, you're the serious techie of the group. I've read their spiel, but in your opinion, what is it that makes it safer? I understood their bit about "not attaching to your operating system" but are there other reasons why it's so much safer? And, what do "tabbed browsing" and "custom skin" mean in the context of internet browsing apps?
melkior

Well, here's the deal:
Firefox doesn't use the "normal" extensions like IE does. So it's not as integrated as IE and therefor it's a little bit harder to get a virus or install a malign ActiveX control or something like that.
Also, it's lighter and faster. It blocks pop-ups on it's own (and it does it very good).
It's updated more often.
Custom skin -- it means you can make it look the way you want it to.
Tabbed browsing minimizes the number of open windows. You can view multiple pages in one window, and switch them with tabs.

Plus there are lots of cools mods you can make on it. Or so I read. Haven't checked them out personally.
------------------------------------------------------
Back on Topic:
Teas is someone who:
1. Max has seen the boobs of
2. EP wants to see the boobs of
3. Fred will probably never see the boobs of.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Edit: Well, post got moved to firefox thread, so I guess Tea ain't the topic anymore

"Firefox doesn't use the "normal" extensions like IE does. So it's not as integrated as IE and therefor it's a little bit harder to get a virus or install a malign ActiveX control or something like that."
Melky...OK, I actually know enough about IT to have fully understood this explanation. This is what sold me. I'm quite aware that one of the weaknesses of IE is the ability for viruses to mimic normal IE file extensions as a way of "attaching" themselves...and then later replicating themselves for disbursement via e-mail, etc. and to launch all sorts of havoc on the OS. Also I'm aware of the danger of malicious ActiveX controls. Typically I use my firewall to block ActiveX controls. Keeps me from enjoying a lot of stuff but like I don't wanna have to go through what I went through again last time my PC fritzed.
If I have time, I'll try the Firefox download this weekend. You've convinced me.

You do that. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who visits the WWW every day.

Except there is ONE thing I don't get...if this ware is so hot, why are they GIVING it away for FREE? How are they making money on this?
I think it was Keynes who said "there's no such thing as a free lunch." Experience has taught me to be wary of anything FREE.
This is the ONLY thing sticking in my craw at the moment.

Ever hear of Linux Natch?
there is a whole bunch of people out there who think "open source" software is the only way to go. if I need a progy I always check "freeware" first it is usually less "buggy"
Go ahead, ask Melkior

Well, Natch, you see there's a thing called Free Software. Yup! It's not a myth.
Currently I'm using more free software than commercial stuff. It works even better and it's free.
melkior
10-21-2006, 02:36 PM
drug's right. Open source is not only free. The source code of the programs is available so you can modify it to suit yourself.
Linux for one is a whole OS made by thousands of enthusiasts. It's more stable than Windows, has a great amount of software (it varies from distribution to distribution) and it's free.
I've been using linux for 10 years now. And I still do.

I have indeed heard of LINUX, Durgs. My understanding is that it is either based on...or designed to replace...the UNIX operating system. Beyond that, I know little about it, having been more of a business applications & product setup & testing, and user training generalist than a true techie, when I worked in IT consulting.
Geesh, back in the day we called free software "shareware". The problem with it was, despite being free, you never knew what kind of virus, worm, or trojan horse might be hiding in it.
Why is that not a concern here?
Natchai
10-22-2006, 01:54 AM
"here" meaning "with Firefox", I mean.
melkior
10-22-2006, 02:37 AM
Because free software isn't shareware.
You can go here: http://www.gnu.org/
and here: http://www.opensource.org/
To read more about free software and open source.
As for Firefox, I've been using it for years and never had trouble with it.
And I reviewd its source code and I guarantee it's very safe.
In the end it's your decision Natch.
But in my experience I had less trouble with open source apps (almost none), and I had lots of problems with Microsoft apps.
Let's put it this way: MS creates apps to earn money.
People who write open source apps do it out of love.

Pretty good comeback, Melky. I'll give it some more thought and probably download it either later today or next weekend.
And now for a turn in the flow of the thread...since this was originally Tea's "Who is" section, and our rather lengthy discussion of Firefox had little or nothing to do with her, I'm thinking she might appreciate it if we moved the firefox discussion portion of the thread to a new thread in the "technical support" thread(s)? Just a thought.

So maybe we should give Tea a new nick? Firefox?

Btw Natch, Firefox 2.0 is out. It came out today.

Classic Maximus response!
well, with your vouching for it Max, and Durgs and Melky giving superb technical perspective, I'll give it a shot.
And then MAYBE I'll be able to see all the wunnerful pictures people post again...instead of just two little hyphen-like dashes where a jpg file link oughta be...

OK. I did it. Finally. Downloaded Firefox and a slew of other apps from the Google site, like Google Updater and Skype (any of you guys use this yet?).
And the result? I'm on Firefox right now. And frankly, I STILL can't see the damned thumbnails. Not a one! Hotlinks to jpg files, yes I can see those, like the one about Kevin Federline's message to Britney.
Unfortunately I STILL can't see thumbnails with funny pix and hot chix.
Damn.

And frustrating. I've changed settings on my firewall every which way from Sunday...at least to the extent I'm comfortable exposing my comp. Nothing seems to work.

you should call those guys - - the Geek Patrol or Geek Squad or Geek something-or-other and have 'em come fix your confuser - - -
((Natchie looks in the phonebook for "Geek Patrol" finds the number, dials the number - and the phone in his kitchen starts ringing - - - coincedence?? I think not.))

Nyuk Nyuk Nyuk....
Yes, whereupon I call on my army of computer geek technicians to temporarily pause in their busy customer service schedules, ask them to converge on company headquarters, and use their collective 1000 years of pc troubleshooting experience to solve the web browser problems for ME...their CEO, their Chairman, their Lord and Master, the one who signs their paychecks and in whose service they toil...yeah, THAT'S it....all so me and my WIFE, Morgan Fairchild...yeah, THAT'S the TICKET...can browse happily ever after, yeah....
