Those arent rats - they look more like hamsters or gerbils - I would go with hamsters!

It doesnt look like the sewer rats ive seen, for starters - rats are brown or black, lab rats are usually white with red eyes - maybe its a circus rat????

"rattus vulgaris" is the common brown rat.
"rattus rattus" is the black or gray rat, these are the boogers that spread the plague!
