Death Proof

Death Proof is the second film in the experience that was Grindhouse. Death Proof is also the one movie of the two in Grindhouse that received the most critical acclaim. It was a festival winner and mostly applauded for Quentin Tarantino's new script and the introduction of female stunt star Zoe Bell (who plays herself in the film). It's a a rad retrospective for car stunts, and the best part is really hearing all that edgy mouthy banter coming out of women's mouths instead of thugs with guns.

Our story is told in two parts. Part one being in Austin, TX. Jungle Julia (Sydney Tamiia Poitier) a sultry voiced celebrity DJ is gathering some close friends out to celebrate the homecoming visit of their friend Arlene (Vanessa Ferlito),mostly referred to as "Butterfly". Shanna (Jordan Ladd) picks the girls up and they head out for a night of fun...so they think. The girls hang out with some boys and have some drinks and femmy hi-jinks at the bar. The catch is this...bitchy Julia announced on the radio that her pal Butterfly is in town and if a guy buys her a beer and recites a certain poem to her, Butterfly will have to give the guy a lapdance. Arlene isn't really having this plan especially when the only man to follow through is a creepy old guy in a racing jacket named Stunt Man Mike (Kurt Russell). If you get the DVD version of Death Proof you get to see the lap dance, if you see it in Grindhouse it's the missing reel, which is a great beat of disappointment for most. The night winds down and the girls are heading to a cabin. They never make it. I am purposely leaving out all the really great Kurt Russell stuff and the girl's demise...it's a MUST see, not a MUST read. I don't wanna ruin it for you.

Skip to, I hate to say I don't remember where the new girls are, but I think it's in the Midwest. Boo, I know. The four new girls we are about to meet are pretty bad ass. They all work in the film industry and are on a break in filming when a friend comes to town. Abernathy (Rosario Dawson) is a make-up artist, Lee (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) is one of the lead actresses in the film, Kim (Tracie Thoms) Stuntwoman...FYI Tracie Thoms is so FANTASTIC!!!! I have a little crush on her, and last but not least the friend from New Zealand, Zoe Bell (herself). Zoe and Kim get a girl boner an idea about play a road game called Mast Head with a fantasy Dodge Charger that someone is trying to sell. What follows is the film worlds most kick ass car chase scene!

Death Proof is very straight forward and much like other Tarantino films the guts lay in the dialog. There aren't huge shocks and surprises, which is fine with me. This movie is all about the women and the cars. IT ROCKS PEEPS!!! I know I've left out sooo much about Kurt Russell's performance, but, it's one to see and not so much chat about. The DVD release of the film has lost of new scenes. A really awesome one where toes are molested.

I give it a: A-
