Pursuit and Distance in Online Dating – Part 2

…..part 1 can be found here…..

Tips On Handling Pursuit & Distance

Accept that sending an email to someone you like the look of but you do not yet know is a far cry from going on a date. This is not meant to put you off, however, you do need a willing partner to start the pendulum of a relationship swinging.

Some people will be shy, or not used to online dating. It can be difficult to assess this from a member’s profile on a dating site, so patience is a virtue when it comes to waiting for people to reply, they may be interested but need to build up the confidence to reply, if you bombard people with emails it may scare them off.

An email not returned is possibly worth a second attempt later, but if you still hear nothing then leave it, accept that the other person is not interested and move on. By not doing this you are in danger of becoming a harasser, and although this may not reflect your true personality it can come across this way, we all have to apply self control at some point in our lives.

If someone does not reply to your email, or they suddenly stop replying during a conversation, accept it and do not take it to heart. There are many reasons why someone will not reply to an email, they could have met someone else, got back with an ex, given up on dating, or they could be on holiday, or busy with work. Again, the more you pursue, the less likely the other person will be to contact you.

Accept and understand that there are people on dating dating sites with all kinds of agendas and some of those will never end up going on a date. They could be getting over an ex, making an ex jealous, massaging their ego, or even just ‘half looking’. No matter how much you try, these people will always be out of reach and your time is far better spent meeting genuine daters.

If in doubt – Move on! Don’t waste time waiting for that special someone to reply, you’re all in the same boat and you shouldn’t feel guilty for emailing as many people as you like, until you reach the dating stage it’s all about seeing who is out there, you’re not committed to speaking with just one person. Meanwhile, you just might get that email you’re waiting for!

Don’t demand answers on why someone is not interested or has stopped replying to emails, just accept that for ‘whatever reason’, it’s time to move on, if they come back great, if not don’t let it perplex you, it is obviously not meant to be at that time, and again, by demanding answers you are in the danger zone of becoming a ‘harasser’.

Basic advice is to look at online dating as a lighthearted affair to begin with, and learn to take rejection like an adult. If someone is not interested, it’s their loss, but to get nasty or accuse people of time wasting is in itself a waste of time. Be mature and adult about it, you don’t have a god-given right to date the people you add as favourites. If you play it cool and respect the dance of pursuit and distance, you will find online dating sites far more rewarding, and once you have fine tuned your approach, and you can apply it to everyday life later!

The main rule of thumb, and one which will stand you in good stead is to never pursue a distancer, it will never work out in the long run and you will save yourself a lot of heartache. Love is a two way game and it needs two people willing to play and do you really want to end up someone just because they ‘gave in’ or would you rather be with someone who genuinely wants to be with you!?

Pursuit and Distance in Online Dating

Pursuit and Distance in Online Dating

Every heard of ‘pursuit and distance’? You may or may not know this term, but you can be sure you’ll have danced to its tune at some point in your life!

‘Pursuit and distance’ is a term given to describe how humans engage in relationships, it is about balance, there is the ‘pursuer’ and the ‘escapee’ and it can be applied to man and wife, parent and child, worker and employee, even friends can sometimes play this difficult game.

Pursuit and Distance In Day To Day Life

This dance of chase and avoidance has been covered in books, poems, literature and films for a very long time, it is a part of human nature. It is a popular subject and one which has been highlighted recently in the Golden Globe award winning ITV1 drama ‘Downton Abbey’. Set in ‘God’s Country’ (Yorkshire). The two lead characters of this quintessentially English costume drama, engage fully in the dance of pursuit and distance. Viewers can relate very well to the script, as will all have taken part in the dance of pursuit and distance at some time or another.

Pursuit and distance is a popular subject for those who specialise in psychological patterns and research. It is studied and written about from marriage counseling to family counseling and can be used in therapy to help pursuers understand their actions and hopefully change their behavior to live a more fruitful and rewarding life and not one based on an endless chase.

It is a fine balance and one which we, as humans, play every day. It could be a mother missing her son who has flown the nest, it’s a hard lesson but children have to make their own way at some point in life and a parent has to understand the boundaries so as not to become a hindrance, whilst still enjoying a happy balanced relationship with their child or children. It could be between two friends, one friend is a bit too keen and can’t understand why the more he or she tries to arrange nights out the less it seems to happen.

Pursuit and distance is usually a game we play and understand without realising, but some times, in certain situations, it can lead to displays of obsessive behaviour. Imagine pursuit and distance as a pendulum, it swings from side to side in a relationship, but in some cases, if pushed too hard from one side it can swing too heavily in the one direction; the more one person pursues, the more the other person tries to avoid contact.

Pursuit and Distance & Online Dating

With the above in mind, we can use the equation for a successful and happy time in online dating.

By respecting and understanding this game of ‘kiss chase’ when meeting someone new, we can get so much more from dating sites.

An online dating site is simply a database full of single people all looking for their special ‘someone’ to date, whether it be for love, friendship or a casual fling. But the way in which we use the site can determine how successful we are.

It is easy to assume that just because someone is there in front of us on the screen they’re ‘up for chatting’ and just because someone has viewed your profile, they will a) want a relationship and b) reply to an email in minutes. In reality, it is fair to assume that if you don’t receive a reply from an email after that person has viewed your profile, there will be no point in sending a third or fourth email. Even if you do receive an email, by appearing too keen you can become a ‘pursuer’ and early on in a friendship, this will not come across well to a prospective partner.

Open Relationships – Loads of problems ahead

The problems with open relationships

Casual Dating

open relationships including FWB

Open relationships can be a way for couples to explore their desires and needs outside of their normal relationship – whilst still relying on their open relationship for intimacy and love. These kinds of open relationships can be successful but frequently a slew of problems arise in open relationships that often end either the open part or the relationship itself. In this piece we’re going to examine some of the problems that frequently arise in open relationships and discuss potential solutions.

The most common problem in all open relationships is jealousy. In reality, despite how much many of us like to kid ourselves, we all get jealous over certain things. Relationships are one of the most common sources of jealousy we experience. We become attached to our partner and often are inclined to act covetously towards them. An open relationship therefore exacerbates this problem as we are forced to share our partner with another or others over time. As a relationship develops this can prove an increasing problem. The potential solutions to this problem are stopping having an open relationship as things progress or making sure both you and your partner can remain jealous free. Overcoming jealousy is possible in an open relationship providing both you and your partner understand that yours is the only relationship in the arrangement.
The next common problem is time. Whilst time might seem like an odd problem an open relationship means that you and your partner will both be spending periods apart with other partners. This means you will be going out together less and will both have days and nights where one person is with another partner and the other is not. Sharing your time in this way can prove to be incredibly frustrating, angering and in some cases emotional depressing. Knowing your partner is sleeping with someone else, or might be, whilst you are sat in front of the TV alone can put a lot of strain on your relationship. The only potential solutions to this are to set times when you will always be together and make sure that you are either out at the same times or together at the same times. Whilst not always possible attempting this can help a relationship.

The final problem we’re going to look at is relationship development. As a relationship progresses one or more partners are likely to want to end the open part of the relationship and “settle down”. This can cause problems if the other person doesn’t want to and can strain a relationship and cause its termination. This is a particularly hard problem to avoid as it normally arises in the course of the relationship meaning the open relationship has been going on for some time. In this situation either you and your partner will be able to successfully end the open side of the relationship or the relationship will end.

Open relationships really are a very tricky relationship to “get right” and you are risking a lot by deciding to enter one. That is not to say you can’t be successful in them only that the majority of these relationships fail after a while. If your relationship is casual this might not be a problem but if you are seriously considering a long term future it is very risky.

Suntherland 1 – Manchester City 0- As City taste first defeat of the season

Suntherland V Manchester City

Suntherland V Manchester City

Very little change on the top of the premiership after the new year fixtures were played. Manchester United who were hot on the heels of Manchester City were beaten yesterday by Blackburn. If Manchester City had beating Suntherland today, they would have open up a significant lead over United, their Manchester rival. Instead, a last minute stoppage time strike by Ji Dong-won saw Suntherland dent Manchester City’s aura of invincibility.
An excellent report of the game on BBC website goes something like this:
Ji Dong-won’s injury-time winner earned Sunderland a superb victory over Premier League leaders Manchester City.

City were aiming to capitalise on Manchester United’s loss to Blackburn, but came up against a determined display by Martin O’Neill’s side.

Nicklas Bendtner and Stephane Sessegnon were denied a goal either side of the break, with Edin Dzeko and Micah Richards both hitting the woodwork.

But with the last kick of the game, Ji rounded Joe Hart to win it.

It was a breathless end to a pulsating second half as the Korean substitute latched onto Sessegnon’s through ball following an isolated counter-attack, before calmly finishing.

And it was a rich reward for a performance which would leave defensive coaches drooling such was their energy all over the pitch and their steel at the back.

Katherine Jenkins and Gethin Jones to split

December 30th, 2011 No comments

Singer Katherine Jenkins and TV presenter Gethin Jones say they are “heartbroken” after splitting up. The pair announced in February that they were getting married after Cardiff-born former Blue Peter presenter Jones proposed in Mexico.

Jones and Jenkins, from Neath announced the break-up on their Twitter accounts. The news was confirmed by the mezzo soprano’s management. They met on Strictly Come Dancing in 2007.

Jenkins, 31, said on Twitter: “Sorry for being quiet of late, its just that I have some very sad news. “Geth & I have decided to go our separate ways. We are both beyond broken hearted.

“All your hugs & support will be much appreciated xxx.”

Jenkins broke the news of the split to her mother Susan, 62, in Neath earlier this week and the pair have spent hours on the phone talking it through.

Speaking from her home in Neath Susan said: “It is very sad for both of them. It is a difficult tIme and the family will be giving Katherine all the support we can.”

Jenkins is due to start the UK leg of her Daydream tour in Oxford next week.

Jones, 33, said on his Twitter: “Hi everybody. I’m deeply sad to tell you that Kath and I have ended our relationship as a couple. We are both heart broken… Gx.”

Shortly after the engagement, newspapers said the couple were planning to get married in Wales in summer 2012.

The couple met when Jones was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing and the singer made a guest appearance on the show.

Earlier this year, Jones had said becoming a husband was “probably going to be the best job I ever have and one I’ll want to do the best I can at”.

If you are drunk don’t drive or even get on a train!

CCTV Footage of a drunken woman falling under a train

Drunk Woman Fall Under Train

Drunk Woman Fall Under Train

The warning that drink driving is not a good idea is getting home (hopefully) because many people don’t drink and drive. Perhaps the warning should go one step further that getting drunk is just not a good idea, especially if you need to get home.

The above video clearly highlight the dangers of getting legless. The video which was issued by the British Transport Police shows a female passenger exiting a carriage at Barnsley station, stumbling backwards and falling in-between the train and platform.

She was quite lucky because another passenger raised an alarm and the woman was rescued from the track and taken to hospital with cuts and bruises. The train was delayed for 20 minutes because of the incident.

“This woman was lucky to only end up with a few minor injuries and, had it not been for the alertness of other passengers who helped her, we could have been dealing with potentially serious injuries,” he said.

The woman featured in the CCTV footage agreed that the police should release the footage to the public to help raise awareness of excessive drinking and its potentially dangers.

The Grey Areas Between An Affair and Married Dating

October 25th, 2011 No comments

Examining the grey areas between an affair and married dating

difference between having an affair and dating while married
The term married dating has arisen in recent years as an often synonymous term for an affair. A lot of the use of the term comes online where dating sites try to steer clear of openly calling and marketing affairs (though of course many sites still do). In this sense married dating is very similar to an affair but in others it is technically not. Married dating can also mean a marriage with an open relationship where both or one partner engages in extra marital relations with consent of the other partner. This might seem abhorrent to many people but it is more common than you might think with many marriages remaining loving, caring and sexually active despite the awareness and practice of extra-marital relations. However, in this article we’re going to examine the grey areas between an affair and married dating as these often become very blurred – both intentionally and unintentionally.
The first thing to consider as a key difference is awareness. As we have already mentioned married dating can exist consensually between married couples or non-consensually. If there is openness about married dating then it falls out of the grey areas and into the white. If there is no consent then we are nowhere near the white. However, the grey area lies in fact in the problem of lying. Many married individuals both on dating sites and in real life will claim that they are either not married or that their partner consents to them having extra marital relations. When you are thinking of starting a relationship with a married individual you need to be aware that they may be lying if they claim to have their spouses consent. This doesn’t necessarily have to affect your own choices of action but it is worth considering as you are very unlikely to have any way of assessing the veracity of what they say.

The second grey area that comes up frequently is trust. Dating someone who is married generally means that you already know they are prepared and able to lie in a relationship. Even if their reasons are justifiable you need to be aware that trust can be a serious issue. If they are not being honest with their spouse then you cannot be sure they are going to be honest with you. If this isn’t a problem for you then that’s ok you just need to be aware.

The final grey area that often occurs comes in the actual differentiation between an affair and married dating. Most affairs usually last less than six months and this implies they are more of a casual fling than a serious attempt to leave a spouse. However, dating usually implies that a more long term relationship is looking to be formed. This creates a serious grey area as if a more long term relationship is sought then you need to examine why the person remains married. Whilst there is nothing provisionally wrong with “testing the waters” you may be putting yourself in a position where you will be hurting someone else in the long or short term. That is not to say that this should stop you but it should give you pause for thought before you take things too far.

Relationships – Sex with your ex part 2

October 23rd, 2011 No comments

Going to bed with your ex- a good or bad idea?

Part 1 of sex with your ex can be found here.

1. Question your motives, a lot of men sometimes go back into old relationships because it’s an easy way of affirming that they are still attractive. The problem is that it sends mixed messages to your ex and is likely to leave you feeling very confused too. Women on the other hand rarely resurrect a sexual relationship with an ex-partner with the express intention of keeping it casual, so if you don’t want to get involved with again don’t go there.
2. If you do want to get back with your ex you will need to work out what went wrong last time if things are going to be different this time, consider therapy and counseling.

If after reading the pros and cons you still believe having sex with your ex is a good idea, here is a guide to make sure you go into it wisely and with realistic expectations:

1- Allow enough time to pass.

Even if you’ve had the most amicable breakup, you still need enough time to cool off before going back into anything intimate. The longer you went out together the longer you need to stay away. This might mean a couple of months for some people, for others it could be a year or more. If the break-up ended with raging arguments, screaming and crying you should wait even longer.

2- Make your intentions clear.

Let your ex no that you are not under any circumstances interested in getting back together and are only looking for a little fun. In fact, you may even want to drop hints about dating other people so that it’s plainly obvious you’re only interested in sex. If you dated for long enough, you should know whether your partner is the type to be OK with that or not. Many people are perfectly fine with a purely sexual relationship, but if you get a hint that your partner is even remotely interested in getting back with you stay far, far, away.

It might be easier to just lie there after you’ve done the deed, but you’re setting yourself up for a potential mess by staying over. Sleepovers are for relationships, not exes who are now friends-with-benefits. Next thing you know, she’ll be cooking you breakfast and the two of you will be shopping for furniture. When you’re done doing the deed and you’ve cleaned up, get out.

Relationships – Sex with your ex Yes or No?

October 21st, 2011 No comments

Having Sex with your ex, good or bad idea?

going to bed with your ex
However it isn’t that uncomplicated, it is very easy for old feelings to resurface and unrealistic expectations of reconciliation can lead to disappointment.
Your relationship wasn’t working so you split up. But your split-up isn’t working too well either. You are single, miserable and surrounded by irritatingly loved-up couples and ever-so-happy families. With Christmas coming, a spot of “no strings” sexual solace in the arms of your ex starts to seem like the solution. Sex with your ex can be very tempting if your ex was the greatest lover you ever had or if you are still physically attracted to them. However, having sex with an ex, no matter how shallow or deep and intimate the relationship was, can be very tricky. Here is a list of the pros and cons of sex with your ex, and how to go about it wisely:
Pros:
Sex with the ex is appealing for many reasons. We feel comfortable with them, both inside and outside the bedroom. A new relationship or hook-up is generally awkward, and first-time sex is always a little uncomfortable. When having sex with an ex, we know their likes, their dislikes and they know ours as well. Sexual familiarity means the sex will probably be very pleasurable. Sex with an ex often feels like the obvious answer especially if your sex life before you broke up was amazing
It’s certainly cheaper. No need for expensive dates or elaborate mating ritual, it’s so much easier than starting something new. There’s a comfort level that comes with knowing someone really well that new relationships just don’t provide.
Cons:
Instead of remembering all the reasons you broke up, you start fantasizing about her soft, warm body up against yours or his big strong arms tightly wrapped around you making you feel safe. And before you know it you have convinced yourself that you can overcome any residual anger or upset and selflessly help each other through the night.
Next comes the reality check. Sex with your ex might relight your fire, but all the baggage that brought you down will still be there in the morning, safe sex is now an issue, too. It’s difficult to admit to having had sex with someone else, so even if your ex promises you that they have been celibate since you split, you will need to use condoms just in case.

Jennifer Lopez – most beautiful woman of 2011

April 15th, 2011 No comments

“People” (you know, the US based celebrity magazine) has just offered a small sample of their ‘Most Beautiful Women older than 35’ list of 2011, sample that told us which of the celebrities are in the top.

On the first position, without any doubt or concern, is the girl from the block, Jennifer Lopez. She has won the “Most Beautiful” and also a place on the first cover of People’s magazine, defeating several other top contestants; among them, there was Eva Longoria, Sandra Bullock or even Dana Delany. All of the above ladies are older than 35, but they are still on the front page of most of the celebrity magazines and catalogs.

Now, it’s obvious that the J Lo (who is currently 42 years old) is making huge sacrifices in order to make that diva appearance we are used with. For example, she admitted that she’s proud not to be 25 years old anymore, and more on that, it’s hard to make a good appearance when nowadays, the HDTV technology lets the users observe even the smallest defect from one’s face. Let’s not forget that she’s one of the current American Idol judges, therefore presenting herself flawless in the front of the camera is definitely a must do for her.

It’s not the first time when People magazine releases such a top. For example, in 2009 and 2008 they did the same thing, and Julia Roberts (who was at that moment 41 years old) and Christina Applegate won the title of the “Most Beautiful Woman”. Therefore, J Lo, known also as “Jenni from the block” as she used to describe herself few years ago, isn’t alone in this hall of fame.

What’s more interesting is the fact that not only mature women are recognized to look well, even though they aren’t 25 anymore. For instance, Sir Sean Connery has won the title of “World’s Sexiest Man” by the time he was 59 years old, and Richard Gere by the time he was 50 years old.

Apple iPad 2 hits the UK market

March 25th, 2011 No comments

Apple iPad 2 was released today for the UK market, the popular tablet being sold as prices starting at £399. Although it will be available in stores after 5PM today, Apple has already received online orders since this morning. However, many people complained about errors when ordering online but it seems UK folks will now have the opportunity to buy it live, from the stores.

The 16GB iPad 2 version will be sold at £399, being the cheapest version available. The 64GB version will be priced at £559 while the 32GB version at £470. Those that require 3G support will have to pay a £100 extra fee. As all latest Apple’s devices, the iPad 2 seems that will have a great positive response in term of sales, but this is to be seen after it hits the shelves today at 5PM.

The Apple iPad 2 will be quite cheap when compared to its competitors (HTC and Motorola), at least the 16GB version will be cheaper than any of them. Moreover, when compared to the first version, this one looks slightly better, it is thinner, weights less and has a more powerful hardware to run upon – it has now the A5 dual core processor and 1GB RAM available.

The stores that have announced they will have the gadget in stock are for now Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone, other operators delaying the announcement for now. We shall wait and see what reactions the customers will have although as it happened before it seems that this will be “yet another long-awaited and heavy sold Apple product”.

Hodgson magic worked for Fulham but not for Liverpool as he is sacked

January 8th, 2011 No comments

Roy Hodgson who made a triumphant return to English football with Fulham after outstanding success in Netherlands has just got the sack at Liverpool as he failed to work his magic there after 20 games.

Hodgson, 63, won only seven of 20 Premier League games after taking over from Rafael Benitez in July 2010 and led the club to 12th in the table.

Former player and manager Kenny Dalglish has been placed in charge until the end of the season.

“Both parties thought it in the best interests of the club that he stand down,” said American owner John W Henry in a statement on the club’s website.

Witches in Romania to place a curse on the government

January 8th, 2011 No comments

For the next few months I will be watching any signs of crack in the Romanian government, the first hint of crack may confirm that the spell Romanian witches plan to place on their government is beginning to take hold.

For the first time Witches and astrologers in Romania are to start paying income tax of about 16% on their earning as they are now classified as self employed.

Witches are planning to gather on Romania’s southern plains and the banks of the Danube to protest against the laws and place a curse on the politicians who voted for the new laws.

Among the vital ingredients of some of the curses that will be raining on Romanian politician and their president in particular includes cat excrement, dead dogs.

If their spell or curse should work on their government, I will definitely be seeking their services to place curses on a number of unpleasant people I don’t quite know how to deal with at present.

Will Ronaldinho sign with Blackburn Rovers ?

January 6th, 2011 No comments

After a long talk with Ronaldinho’s manager, Venky’s representative has offered a deal of about £20 million for three years of playing. According to Venky’s Anuradha Desai, the 30-year-old football player is really keen to play in English Premier League and that is exactly what Rovers are placing their bets on. Moreover, it seems that not only Ronaldinho is under Blackburn’s radar but also the 35-year-old player of Los Angeles Galaxy, David Beckham.

Not only Blackburn is interested in Beckham but also Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United as well. As well, Ronaldinho is wanted by Brazilian clubs Palmeiras, Gremio and Flamengo but it seems that the offer placed by Blackburn is very tempting for AC Milan leaders and also for the player, in terms of wages and possibility to play in English Premier League.

Ronaldinho left Barcelona in 2008 for AC Milan but quickly lost his place in the first 11 when Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho signed with the club last summer. The offer for the 30-year-old player is, according to Desai, as following: £6.5 million for the first year and £7.2 million for the second and third year, leading to a total of £20.9 million for a three-years contract.

Blackburn’s manager Steve Kean stated that he does not know how far the discussions between Indian owners and Ronaldinho’s representative have reached however he would be more than happy to train a twice World Player of the Year that could really add the spark needed by Rover football team. The rumours about acquisitions do not end up here while Desai also added that she is looking for other players as well, one of them would be the former Blackburn’s player Damien Duff.

Classic Album Review – Strapping young lad – Alien

November 23rd, 2009 No comments

ladApparently Devin Townsend was to disband SYL after ‘97’s City album, which would have been a tragedy. But they say September 11 rekindled the anger and aggression in him sufficiently to resurrect the Metallic beast , and the result was ‘03’s ‘SYL’, a more organic, although no less devastating release.
Now in early ‘05, Devin and co. unleash ‘Alien’, and upon initial listens the word devastation springs immediately to mind again. Once again, the band signals it’s intentions from the get-go, with the typically blistering, but symphonic ‘Imperial’ (and it’s immortal opening line ‘We have returned’!)
And once again Devin and his loyal sidemen take us on an apocalyptic journey through the scariest imaginable industrial flavoured soundscapes, but tempered with very Devin-esque glimpses of melody. You may have read that Alien seems to combine the noise of City, with the organic clarity of SYL. I believe this to be the case, and it culminates in Alien being Strapping’s strongest and most appealing release to date.
No standouts here – the album is wall to wall strength, with the song writing and playing being of as world  conquering calibre as you would expect. Even the quite piece ‘Two Weeks’ is a very nice surprise. Devin is yet again in very fine fettle, vocally, especially in ‘Thellamus’
Overall, stunning results. But then we’ve come to expect nothing less of Mr Devy Townsend. Strapping deliver on every possible level yet again.
Alien gets ****1/2
A quick word  on the accompanying DVD. It’s an excellent documentary on the making of the album. Definitely one of the more worthwhile DVD’s I’ve seen with an album release I’ve yet seen.

Dream Theater – Black Clouds and Silver Linings

November 11th, 2009 No comments

BTI have every DT album ever made, and I was looking back over their back catalogue the other day. I realized that they have released a brand new studio album every two years, without fail, since 1997’s ‘Falling into Infinity’.

Add into this equation numerous live albums, ‘official’ bootlegs, plus the fact that they tour their arses off for months and months on end and all have side projects and solo ventures when they’re NOT doing DT, and you have one hell of a ridiculously prolific bunch of musos. These blokes must live, eat, sleep and shit music!

The upshot of all of this DT is an incredible band to be a big fan of. You can rely on them to have something brand new out by the time you’ve fully ingested the previous one! Plus most of their fans can get to see them live too if they want to. They’ve even started coming here regularly!

But of course, questions remain (and their fickle fans tend to ask them in a very overt and demanding fashion!). What does the prolific nature of their output do to the QUALITY of it? Do their extra-curricular activities have an effect? And, oh yeah, what’s the new album like? (yes, I’m getting there!)

Well, let’s just say that Black Clouds and Silver Linings is a damn fine DT album. It ain’t their best, and I’m one who believes that they don’t actually have a ‘worst’ album, just their absolute ball-tearers and their really really good ones. This one is in the latter category, where I would place every one of their releases since ‘Train of Thought’, which was their last ball-tearer and finest moment, in this fan and writer’s humble opinion.

The songs themselves are rock solid epic length Dream Theater tours de force, as we come to expect. There are heavy, almost thrashy moments, there are some semi-cheesy ballads (actually possibly a little too much of this), there’s moments of soaring melody, twists and turns, complexity, odes to previous tunes and of course levels of musicianship light years beyond the aspirations of mere mortals.

In a nutshell, let’s just take the easy road and use a couple of clichés. Black Clouds and Silver Linings is par for the course, business as usual for these legends of prog! Bring on the tour.

It gets ****.

Observe and Report reviewed by Maximus

April 26th, 2009 No comments

observe_and_report
Warner Bothers new comedy Observe and Report was released in UK last Friday (24th of April). In the film a security shopping mall security guard who suffers from bi-polar depression was asked to stop a flasher from embarrassing shopper at the mall he works, he did manage to arrest the flasher but thing did not go as expected.

As usual, the guys in US gets to see new films a good two weeks or longer before it crossed the Atlantic and find its way to UK cinemas, I would have thought this days that every thing is sort of done digitally film released can be arrange so that they are released same day worldwide. Anyway, Maximus was the film in US he gave his own personal review as follows:

Okay. Suffice it to say that I went in expecting a certain kind of movie and got… Something else.
Observe and Report is touted as a comedy. And though there are some pretty funny parts to this movie, it is anything but a comedy. This is no Paul Blart: Mall Cop. This movie is a bit disturbing, if only because you can ALMOST see the real life aspects of the film. Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is the bi-polar head of security at the mall. He is tormented by a flasher who, at the beginning of the movie, is running around the parking lot scaring the hell out of the female shoppers. Ronnie is in love with Brandi (Anna Faris), a make-up counter girl in one of the stores in the mall. She barely tolerates Ronnie. But when Brandi gets “attacked” by the flasher Ronnie makes it his quest to catch the pervert.

Ronnie also wants to be a cop and goes about applying for the police academy. Of course he fails. And there is one scene that sums up the entire movie : Detective Harrison (Ray Liotta) is Ronnie’s nemesis in the police department and he is relishing the moment of telling Ronnie that he didn’t pass the psychological evaluation for the academy – he tells one of his police buddies to hide in the closet while he breaks the news to Ronnie. So halfway through Harrison telling Ronnie that he didn’t make it, Harrison’s police buddy comes out of the closet and says, “I’m sorry. You know, I thought this would be funny, but instead it’s just sad.” And that’s the movie in a nutshell – it’s sad and more than a little pathetic.

Woman life saved by Wonderbra

April 24th, 2009 No comments

Wonderbra which has sort of become a euphemism for underwired bra was made very famous by Eva Hezigova in an advert in a popular advert in the 1990 simply titled “Hello Boys”. The Wonderbra in particular and underwire bra in general is favoured by women of certain age when trying to defy gravity and it tends to work quite well.
Men tends to be fooled by the miracle of wonderbra/underwire bra as the helps the lady give the impression that her assets are either larger than they are or more pert than they actually are.
The miracle of wonderbra/underwire bra goes beyond the aforementioned uses for a 57-year old woman from Detroit who saw robbers breaking into her neighbor’s house, the thieve saw that the woman saw then and fired at her, luckily, the bullet struck the underwire of the lady’s bra taking a lot of wind out of the bullet’s sail, the woman sustained serious injury as a result but not life threatening injuries. If not for her underwire bra, she will probably be dead.

Home Office and Porn – take two

April 7th, 2009 No comments

homeofficeporn

British civil servants are portrayed as button up Sir Humphrey who are so preoccupied with keeping Britain great that they don’t have much fun, even when they are having fun, they will either be going to concerts, art gallery and other high brow cultural events. The past few weeks has cast shadows over that.

First was the revelation that the husband of the home secretary bought two adult DVD and claim the cost back from the tax payer, next was the revelation today that the home office mistakenly linked to a Japaneses porn site. A link from a page providing information about the Office for Security and Counter Terrorism was supposed to point to a body called the Technical Advisory Board – actually went to a porn site. The Home Office said that the site it was linking to had become defunct and the domain name been bought by a different company.

May I suggest to the home office that they leave the link in place and just let the husband of their boss Jacqui Smith know that the link is there, it will save the home office a few pounds in expenses claim for adult entertainment their boss’s husband would normally make for his adult DVDs.

Lost – Max’s viewpoint

April 5th, 2009 No comments

After a mysterious and bloody airplane crash, 48 survivors are left stranded on a Pacific Island… miles off course. It soon becomes apparent that they will not have to cope only with the forces of nature, but with the island’s secrets, including the Dharma Initiative, the ‘Lost Numbers’, the “others” (or hostiles) and the strange black smoke- to name a few. There is also much more than meets the eye, as it becomes apparent that everyone is connected in some way and that everyone has a purpose to live on the island… and for some, to die.

The survivors include doctor Jack, now freed prisoner Kate, one hit wonder rock star Charlie, Iraqi military vet Sayid, and a mysterious man named Locke. For a while their goal is simple survival, but they soon realize that it was far more than mere chance that brought them together, and each of them has a purpose that will help them unlock the island’s secrets. The chance of being found and rescued is pretty slim, so the survivors have to cope with a set of challenges. They have to learn to survive on the island, a mysterious place with enough dangers on its own. Also, they have to learn to live with each other if any success is to be expected. And finally, they have to live with themselves and their pasts. Interwoven with the events on the islands are flashbacks to the pasts of 14 main characters. Step by step, we learn a little more about their diverse and unexpected pasts as the group’s quest to survive takes shape.

Fulham 0 – Liverpool 1

April 5th, 2009 No comments

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premiership yesterday in a dramatic way. Yossi Benayoun scored an injury-time winner which Fulham could not respond to. It looks as if the game was going to end in draw if not for Benayoun’s stoppage time goal.

Liverpool are perhaps temporarily ahead of Manchester United by two points however Manchester United has two games in hand, if Man U win both games they will move to the top by 4 points ahead of Liverpool.
Before the dramatic win, Andrea Dossena hit the bar twice – each time with a header, Xabi Alonso volleyed against the bar and Fernando Torres dragged a shot against the post.

You can discuss Liverpool’s win and other sports related issues at Ozami Sports forum.

Razor sharp reality

April 10th, 2006 No comments

Well, the newsletter is finally out. And I kinda like it!
No really… Some people are complaining about the design, size and whatnot but I really liked it.
Sure, the desing can be improved but that’s a minor thing if you ask me.
Btw, I was away from the site for a while — well not really away but I wasn’t on the site like I used to be.
I had some exams and some personal work to do but now it’s all done and I can enjoy Ozami once again.
I have to say I really like what this site has grown into. It’s a great community and I consider all of the regulars as my friends — in fact, I couldn’t see it any other way.

And people, this is so cool.
Join in, st4lk3r and me are getting bored! :D

Cheers!

Oh, why is this post called “Razor sharp reality”? Dunno really… It’s the name of the song I wrote today so it was the first thing on my mind when I was writing the title.

How ’bout a flying dog?

February 6th, 2006 No comments

News from China made a certain amount of turmoil around the world.
Their scientists were able to fuse human and rabbit cells. They let the embryos live for a while but they destroyed them later.
But this isn’t the first incident of this type.
Scientists at the Mayo Clinic created pigs with human blood, and at Stanford University plans exist to create mice with human brains — the reason for this is probably cost of special effects for Stewart Little movie so they decided to create actors for it. :)
So, chimeras and whatnot are being created all around the world. It seems we can’t avoid this.
So I ask — how ’bout a flying dog?

Mine’s a Guinness

January 23rd, 2006 No comments

That’s a phrase usually coming from my mouth whenever some poor bloke says he’s buying a round.
I always prefered dark beer. Tastes better, looks better and generaly is better.
Now Guinness — that even ain’t a beer. It’s the drink of the gods.
No, I’m not on their payroll — I’m trying to point out what a simple pleasure can grow into.
I was probably six when I first tasted beer. It took me to get to the age of 14/15 to get a likeing for beer.
In the States the legal age for drinking is 21. Here in Croatia it’s 18 but most kids start going out at the age of 14 – and thus they start drinking.
Croatia is well known for its wine. But that’s not Croatian kid’s favourite — it’s beer.
Now, let’s get back to the story.
I tried Guinness for the first time when I was 16. I was in London — you couldn’t get the stuff yet in Croatia. Back in Yugoslavia you could buy it in any store (same as now) but back then the war was barely over and our import/export was screwed up.
London was a big mixture of experiences for me. A lot of stuff I never seen before.
I went there to study English language and ended up drinking beer.
And the second was far more educational. Now, don’t jump at me! Wait ’till I finish the story.
There were two reasons for this:
1. My English was already good (if I may say so) and the only thing I could do is brush up on my accent.
2. I got drunk and after that it took me 15 minutes to get beaten up and mugged.
Now that is education! Never get drunk alone in a city you don’t know well!
Fortunately I didn’t have much money on me and I didn’t carry my passport with me. I got sobered up quickly and went home.
Never told this to anyone untill now.
Next day I was drinking Guinness again — but this time in my hotel room. Much safer! (except for your wallet – those mini-bars should be illegal — I payed less for some motorcycles)
But ever since then I have this great affection towards Guinness.
The reason I’m writing this all?
Well I just opened one. ;)

Don’t drink and drive…

January 10th, 2006 No comments

State senator, Bill Alter wants to force grocery and convenience stores in Missouri to sell warm beer.
He explains that warm beer wouldn’t attract drivers to open it and drink it after visiting a store.

The idea came from a fifth-grade student who participated in a program to teach elementary students about state government.

He asked them for new law suggestions and this was one of them…

Go figure!

Binary code

December 31st, 2005 No comments

Since we had a little incident with binary code on Ozami Forums — let’s talk about binary code.
First a couple of words on binary system.
Binary system uses only two digits: 0 and 1.
Our (human) decimal system uses 10 digits: from 0 to 9. Why?
Well, it’s only natural — ten is a nice round number, seems almost important! :)
And we have ten fingers — and that’s the way we started to count at first — using fingers.
Now back to binary! Why does it use only two digits?
When first computer-like machines were produced they needed to have some kind of a memory to store data. They also needed some carriers for the data between differrent parts of the computer.
They were made from differrent matterials over the years but they had something similair — they always had two stable states. The easiest way to describe these two states was using 0 and 1.
And since electricity (and now even light) was chosen as the carrier it was again logical to use 0 and 1.
0 = no current
1 = current present
Easy!
And we could even get all of our numbers into the binary system.
Binary 0 is also decimal 0. Binary 1 is also decimal 1.
So decimal 2 is binary 10. Decimal 3 is 11 and so on.
Furthermore in binary 1+1=10.
That should give you a picture of how it works.
Back to the binary code
But we use letters and special signs on the computer too. So we needed to show them with 0 and 1.
There are many different standards for encoding letters into binary digits.
But the most common way is ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange).
It uses 8 binary digits to describe one letter or special sign.
So that’s what binary code is all about — nothing special!

Persistence of Time

December 29th, 2005 No comments

Max, did a great job reviewing the last year. Which made me think about the next one.
2006 — the New Year.
Let me write this from a perspective of someone living in a small European country in transition. Which actually sums up everything.
1400 years ago a small tribe of Croats came from the far east and moved into the plains next to the Adriatic Sea. They settled there and created a small country. It took them a century to get their first king crowned.
The country developed and grew for the next 400 years. Around the time when Great Britain was conquered for the last time, Croatia was conquered for the first time.
Well, conquered is how I see it. We entered a union with Hungary and Austria. That lasted for some 800 years under various names.
And then we were free! Yeah, right! We entered a union with some other eastern Slavic countries — Yugoslavia was born.
It took us 200 years to get out of that mess.
And now we’re free! Again — yeah, right!
Now we’re entering the EU — I won’t say that EU is a bad thing. I won’t even say that Croatia as a part of the EU is a bad thing.
But I won’t also say that it’s a good thing. Why?
Well, I mentioned some fictional country in transition. How can a country who doesn’t know how to feed its own people enter a economical, monetary and political union as EU?
Hell if I know! But it seems that I’ll find out.
We’re due to enter around 2008 so my 2006 is going to be a painful year. A lot of reforms, new laws and suchlike.
On the other hand — things seem to be looking up around the world. Even here.
Maybe 2006 won’t be a bad thing — maybe it will suck as 2005 (as Max put it).
I really don’t know.
But I know one thing — I wish you all a great 2006!
And please don’t blame me for using this blog as a tunnel for my frustrations.
Cheers!

milky’s world

December 26th, 2005 2 comments

OK, I’ve decided to create this blog category for some of my insane ramblings which I’ll occasionally produce but I’ll have no normal drawer to file them.
Here I am, in my old town Pozega — a small town in Croatia. I’m visiting my family for the holidays. And I’m kind of glad to be here (not just cause of my family). I haven’t been here for some time now. Not much has changed but it’s different nevertheless.
I tried to catch some of my old friends, but as I expected they now have lives which aren’t in sync with mine. Nothing strange — yet a man feels uneasy. It leaves a strange feeling of emptiness.
On the other hand I also have changed and have new friends. And I can’t really say I’m sorry for not being so close with my old friends. The thing that shocked me the most was the fact that a few of us after not seeing each other for a couple of years had nothing to talk about over a cup of coffee. And we grew up together. Really strange.
It would be nice to get some comments if you had similar experiences in your life.
Makes a man think…
Cheers people!
